Starting a business is tough. Starting a green business in Africa can feel almost impossible. The cost of implementing renewable energy, the difficulty in accessing eco-friendly materials and the lack of government incentives make sustainability feel like a luxury. But green business is not a luxury. We need it as business owners.
For a clothing manufacturer for example, switching to sustainable fabrics might feel expensive upfront, but doing so can open doors to international markets that demand ethical production. A small roadside shop can save money by using solar-powered lighting instead of relying on an unreliable electricity grid. These choices don’t just make a business greener - they make it stronger and more competitive.
It’s also important to focus on what you can do with what you have. You don’t need a state-of-the-art system to start; even reusing materials or recycling waste can create an impact. The goal is progress, not perfection.
