Your established thought processes may be holding you back. When examining a problem or observing the world, try to be aware of the assumptions you’re bringing with you. You may discover that your presumptions are too narrow, self-limiting, or just wrong. A closer examination may reveal new options that you were unable to see.
For example, imagine you’re trying to reduce materials costs. Switching your product composion could save quite a bit, but you’ve always assumed customers would reject the final product because of a perceived quality.
Look closer. Have you ever actually asked your customers how they’d feel? If not, you’re making an unfounded assumption. A quick survey might reveal that your customers would be okay with the change, allowing a cost innovation you would have missed otherwise. Always question your assumptions to make sure they’re valid.
