At Lean on Women CBO, we work with rural women who are limited in resources such as land, capital, and access to sustainable livelihood opportunities. In regions such as Uasin Gishu, Nandi, and West Pokot, aquaculture remains a relatively new and underutilized concept. Yet, women face multiple challenges in earning a stable income, while their communities continue to struggle with nutritional deficiencies. Traditional fish farming is costly, labor-intensive, and slow, often locking out women and youth. The Vertical Lake model directly addresses these challenges by providing women with affordable, low-risk aquaculture technology that generates income within three months, supplements household diets with healthy proteins, and creates job opportunities for smallholder farmers. This solution not only empowers women economically but also strengthens food and nutrition security in their communities.
