Paying people fairly is not just the right thing to do, but also the smart thing to do. When people feel valued, they stay longer, care more and take ownership. You, in turn, will reduce your rate of turnover, build trust and you will eventually attract better talent. But beyond all that, it’s about decency.
If someone is showing up every day to help build your vision, the least you can do is make sure they’re not leaving each month more financially anxious than they came in. Respect starts with pay. Recognition starts with pay. Retention starts with pay. You can’t separate values from payroll and then call yourself a values-driven business. It just doesn’t work that way.
