Know how to read people

Section 1 : Get a baseline first

16%

Many nonverbal cues are deviations from normal behavior. In order to judge when someone is behaving abnormally you first need to establish a baseline for their standard reactions.  Pay attention to the nuances in tone, volume, and pacing, as they can convey underlying emotions and attitudes. For instance, a soft-spoken tone coupled with hesitant speech might indicate nervousness or reservation, whereas a lively and enthusiastic delivery could suggest genuine interest and engagement. Furthermore, consider the content of the conversation and how it aligns with the speaker's nonverbal cues, as inconsistencies between verbal and nonverbal communication may signal underlying discomfort or deception.

Moreover, understanding the broader context of the interaction is essential for accurate interpretation. Take into account factors such as the setting, the relationship between participants, and any external influences that may impact behavior. For example, networking events often entail a mix of professional and social dynamics, which can influence how individuals present themselves and interact with others. By being attuned to these contextual cues, you can gain a deeper understanding of the motivations and intentions driving people's behaviors, allowing you to navigate networking situations more effectively and build meaningful partnerships.
