Unfortunately many of us in leadership believe that taking breaks will slow down progress, but the reality is quite the opposite. When we push ourselves too hard, our teams feel the strain. Mistakes become more common, communication breaks down and morale starts to suffer. On the flip side, when we prioritise our well-being, we set a positive example for our teams. The drive to keep going without rest may come from a desire to be constantly productive, but it often results in diminishing returns.
Picture a leader who steps away from their desk to take a walk or even just takes a day off to recharge. Their team observes this behaviour and understands that taking care of oneself is part of doing great work. It creates a healthy culture where employees are not afraid to take time for their own well-being, resulting in higher productivity, better teamwork and reduced burnout.
CEO on the other hand, who consistently skips holidays and weekends to stay on top of work will feel accomplished in the short term. But over time, this habit can lead to exhaustion, irritability and eventually a decline in overall performance. Breaks allow us to reset and avoid this downward spiral.
