Empowering Smallholders with Biogas and Sustainable Farming

Biogas Production and Sustainable Farming for Smallholders

My project is about empowering smallholder farmers across Liberia by transforming organic and animal waste into valuable resources clean energy and organic fertilizer. Through biogas production, we capture methane gas from farm waste and convert it into safe, affordable cooking fuel. This clean energy reduces reliance on charcoal and firewood, helping families breathe healthier air and protecting Liberia’s forests from deforestation.

At the same time, the leftover nutrient-rich slurry from biogas digesters becomes organic fertilizer, which farmers use to enrich their soils naturally. This promotes sustainable farming practices that increase crop yields, improve food security, and preserve the environment.

Our project creates jobs by training local technicians  such as University graduate  and other vlunerable youth accords Liberia to build, maintain, and monitor biogas systems and by supporting farmers to adopt climate-smart agricultural methods. These opportunities strengthen rural economies, reduce poverty, and build resilience against climate change.

By addressing energy poverty and agricultural challenges together, this initiative directly contributes to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

In essence, this project fosters healthier communities, sustainable livelihoods, and a greener future for Liberia and beyond.
