Nakuru Tubers
Nakuru Tubers

Nakuru Tubers is a social enterprise founded by a passionate team of young Kenyan agricultural researchers. Driven by a shared concern for the limited access to high-quality seed potatoes faced by smallholder farmers, we strive to empower them through knowledge sharing, innovative solutions, and a commitment to sustainable practices.

Our Mission: To revolutionize potato farming in Kenya by providing farmers with the resources, knowledge, and support they need to achieve increased yields, improved livelihoods, and enhanced food security for their communities.

Our Approach:

We address the challenges faced by smallholder farmers through a three-pronged approach:

High-Quality Seed Distribution: We produce high-quality seed potato of climate resilient varieties. This significantly increases yield potential compared to traditional, low-quality seeds.
Training and capacity building-  We have developed a user-friendly digital platform accessible through mobile phones and web browsers. This platform delivers a comprehensive library of training modules encompassing:

  • Seed selection and preparation techniques
  • Land preparation and planting practices
  • Soil health management and sustainable methods
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for disease and insect control
  • Effective water management practices like micro-irrigation
  • Post-harvest handling and storage techniques

Bundled services: We offer bundled services (extension services, market information, weather updates, financial services, inputs and facilitate farmer-to-farmer learning programs) to farmers from the digital platform

Our Impact:

By providing farmers with access to high-quality seeds, essential knowledge, and potential financial resources, Nakuru Tubers aims to significantly increase potato yields. This translates to:

Improved Food Security: Increased potato production contributes to household food security and reduces dependence on imported food staples.
Enhanced Income Potential: Higher yields lead to increased income for farmers, allowing them to invest in their families and livelihoods.
Sustainable Practices: We promote sustainable farming techniques, contributing to soil health and environmental protection.
Empowerment: Knowledge and access to resources empower farmers to be more resilient and take control of their agricultural future.
Looking Forward: Nakuru Tubers envisions a future where Kenyan potato farmers are equipped with the knowledge and resources they need to thrive. We are committed to expanding our reach and collaborating with stakeholders across the agricultural sector to ensure a more secure and sustainable food system for future generations.
