Access to Clean Water in Niabang, Cameroon

Safe water supplies, hygienic sanitation and good water management are fundamental to global health.  In Cameroon: An estimated 6678 children under 5 died of malaria in 2016*. 93,000 children under 5 die every year. Diarrhoea is the principal cause of morbidity and mortality in children in Cameroon. More than 5M people are at risk of schistosome infection, estimated 2M are infected and mainly children/pupils between the ages of 6–15 years old made up the most vulnerable groups, followed by fishermen, women and farmers. 80% of the population has no access to clean water.

Niabang ranch is located near fishing ponds, rivers and lakes; as such populations living there are at higher risk of contracting water-borne illnesses and diseases spread by insects. A large percentage of the disease burden can be prevented by: increasing access to safe drinking water; improving sanitation and hygiene; improving water management to reduce risks of water-borne infectious diseases, and accidental drowning during recreation.

Project aim: 
Provide access to clean water to help control parasitic infections, diseases spread by insects, and empower the community Goals: Improve access to safe water. Help reduce the # of children’s death from diarrhoea, malaria, drowning. Decrease SCH exposure of women and babies through sustainable access to safe water
