Derrick Edem Akpalu, PhD
CEO & Co-founder | Revna Bioscience
Dr. Akpalu’s academic training and professional experiences span Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa. His work covers the biomedical sciences and clinical research fields. He has held roles in global settings, such as Associate Director and Clinical Research Scientist at Johnson and Johnson’s (J&J’s) Janssen R&D Ltd, USA, and now leads Revna Biosciences’ precision medicine agenda in Africa. In the past, he was also a Principal Clinical Research Scientist in J&J’s Ethicon group, USA, following his previous role as a Clinical Pharmacology Scientist at the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of J&J, USA. Before this, he completed a dual degree: a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences and a Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR); at the Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), Atlanta, GA, USA. He also has a master's degree in Biomedicine from the University College London and an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry with Microbiology from Queen Mary, University of London, UK. As Associate Director, he served as Study Responsible Scientist providing scientific and clinical input to a cross functional global team for the development, execution, and advancement of clinical strategies in the solid oncology therapeutic area.
Dr. Akpalu is a Reviewer for the Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry journal and serves as a Fellow for the think tank Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) and uses this opportunity to advocate for public health and clinical research advancement. He is the recipient of the Morehouse School of Medicine 2021 professional achievement award in Clinical Research. His current focus is leveraging the composite of his experiences to attain Revna Biosciences’ goals of championing precision medicine and value-based advanced molecular diagnostic solutions in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). His enduring commitment to this cause is embodied by his ongoing work with Revna Biosciences.
He has strategically forged alliances with companies in the USA, Europe, South Korea, Ghana, and other African countries. Derrick has assembled a team of like-minded and passionate individuals dedicated to bringing much needed healthcare innovation to SSA using access to prompt and highly accurate molecular diagnostics as a starting point for precision medicine advancement in SSA. Dr Akpalu enjoys spending time with his family. He’s an ardent cook and a fan of the Arsenal Football Club.

During the confab, an inspirational speaker or thought leader provides remarks for 10-minutes focusing on their professional journey, particularly as it relates to entrepreneurism in Africa. This is followed by randomly assigned small group virtual breakout sessions where attendees connect with others, discuss bootstrap briefs and gain recognition for their business, project or idea.
