Leadership feels different these days

Section 2 : The leadership tightrope

50%

Striking this balance requires a careful approach. Adapt too much and you risk inconsistency, appearing indecisive or playing favorites. Stand too firm and you come off as rigid, unapproachable, or outdated. Employees today want flexibility but also clarity. They value autonomy but still need guidance. They want recognition but also expect accountability.

Walking this tightrope can be exhausting and it’s no surprise that many leaders feel stretched thin. The solution isn’t trying to be everything to everyone however, but rather knowing when to adapt and when to stand firm. Leadership today requires self-awareness, the ability to read the room and the wisdom to know which approach best serves both the employee and the business in any given situation.

Some aspects of leadership should remain constant: your values, the company’s mission and the overall expectations for professionalism and performance. But within that framework, flexibility can be your greatest strength. Think of it like coaching: some players need tough love, others need encouragement. The goal is still the same - winning the game - but the approach varies based on what gets the best results. Leadership is no different.
