Leadership feels different these days

Section 3 : Seeing both sides

It’s easy to feel like leadership has become an impossible task, with expectations higher than ever. There’s even an emerging trend where employees would rather move horizontally in their careers if there’s an increase in pay, rather than move vertically into leadership roles even with a salary boost. The prestige of leadership is no longer as enticing when it comes with increased scrutiny, emotional labour and the constant need to adapt to shifting expectations.

But if we take a step back, this shift in workplace culture isn’t entirely negative. Employees today aren’t just chasing titles. They’re prioritising roles that align with their values, work-life balance and long-term well-being. This may seem like a loss for leadership but it also signals an evolving workforce that values meaning and engagement over hierarchy. For leaders, this presents an opportunity: to build workplaces where leadership is not just about authority, but about influence, trust and shared success.

At its core, employees today want to feel valued, respected and heard. They want meaning in their work and a leader who genuinely cares. While it may feel overwhelming, these expectations also push leaders to evolve in ways that create stronger, more engaged teams. Good leaders see this shift not as a burden, but as a chance to build teams that are engaged and motivated. Leadership today isn’t about rigid control but about setting clear expectations while remaining adaptable.
