Conflicts of interest often escalate because they’re hidden. Being upfront about potential issues doesn’t just protect you - it earns respect. If a partnership or project could create conflicting obligations, address it head-on. Stakeholders are far more likely to work with you when they trust you to be honest, even when the truth is inconvenient.
Openness also helps you find creative solutions. A perceived conflict might be resolved with clear boundaries, but only if you’re willing to discuss it. Silence, on the other hand, often looks like deceit.
