One of the biggest mistakes we make when pitching is using a one-size-fits-all approach. Not everyone you meet at a networking event is a potential investor or customer, but they could still be valuable connections. Tailor your pitch to the person you’re talking to. If they’re an industry insider, you can go into more detail about your unique selling point or market strategy. If they’re new to the field, keep it simple and relatable.
Start by asking questions and showing genuine interest in what they do. This builds rapport and also helps you understand what aspects of your startup will resonate with them. If they’re experiencing the problem you’re solving, they’ll be more likely to engage. Adapting your pitch to their perspective makes it more relevant and memorable.
Knowing your audience and connecting on a personal level makes you more memorable. Don’t then obsess over collecting business contacts but rather on building genuine relationships that last.
