Sweet Potato Company (Spota Company, in acronym) is an agribusiness company founded by a young Burundian; Kevin Niyonkuru, in 2018. Spota company processes the sweet potatoes into various products:

  • Sweet potato-based porridge flour and baking flour,
  • Sweet potato-based bakery products and sweet potato chips.

Spota Company has been founded to solve the following 2 main problems:

  1. Malnutrition in the EAC Member States
The Central and East African Countries are among the top African countries with a very big rate of malnutrition. On this list, Burundi is the first with a malnutrition rate of 56.5%, Democratic Republic of Congo the second with 40.3%, Tanzania the third with 30.6%, Rwanda the fourth with 29.8%, South Sudan the fifth with 27.9%, Uganda the sixth with 23.4%, Kenya the seventh with 18.4% and Somalia the eight with 18%.
  2. Sweet potato post-harvest losses

This problem is being observed in the Central and East Africa countries while the mentioned countries are on list of the top African countries with more resources that can contribute in reducing the rate of malnutrition. Some of the above-mentioned resources are the sweet potatoes and the Central and East Africa is well represented with 5 countries in the top10 10 African countries with a very big production of sweet potatoes) classified as follow among the top 10 African countries (referring to the statistics of 2022 of https://africaviewfacts.com/stats/top-sweet-potatoes-producers-in-africa/ ):

Since the sweet potato cannot be kept for long period of time when harvested and not consumed or processed; the sweet potato farmers register a very big loss of their production which makes them stay in poverty. Thus, Spota Company processes the sweet potato into various products in order to contribute to the Food and Nutrition Security Policy through the Value Addition by promoting:

  • Food Security
  • Effective Post Harvest Management (offering the flow market to sweet potato farmers)
  • Food Nutrition
  • Maternal nutrition for women of reproductive ages,
  • Infant and young child nutrition and aadolescent Nutrition,
  • Prevention and management of acute malnutrition,
