Every two minutes, a woman dies from causes related to pregnancy or childbirth. That’s over 287,000 maternal deaths each year (WHO, 2023). The vast majority of these deaths occur in low-resource or humanitarian settings, where up to 60% of maternal fatalities happen in fragile, displaced, or migration-affected contexts (UNFPA, 2022). In East Africa alone, refugee and migrant women are three times more likely to give birth without a skilled attendant and five times more likely to die from preventable complications such as postpartum hemorrhage, sepsis, or obstructed labor.

The Maisha Maternity Briefcase was designed to bridge this gap; bringing essential maternal healthcare to women on the move, in displacement, or in areas without reliable access to clinics. It is a portable, modular, and AI-enabled toolkit that equips caregivers, midwives, and mothers themselves with the tools, guidance, and resources needed for safe pregnancy and emergency delivery anywhere, anytime.

The Problem We’re Solving

Women in migration and remote regions often face a continuum of risk:

  1. Lack of access to skilled attendants: Over 50% of births in refugee camps occur without trained personnel.
  2. Long travel times: Many expectant mothers in rural Kenya, Somalia, and South Sudan must travel over 20 km to reach a facility, often without transport.
  3. Medical supply gaps: In humanitarian crises, essential tools like sterile gloves, cord clamps, or thermometers are often unavailable.
  4. Breakdowns in maternal data: Lack of continuous prenatal records leads to delayed diagnosis and preventable emergencies.

    The Solution: Maisha Maternity Briefcase
The Maisha Maternity Briefcase addresses these challenges through a two-tier system housed within a single, durable, and locally manufacturable case:

Tier 1 – Prenatal & Check-Up
Focused on monitoring maternal health in the high-risk second and third trimesters, this tier includes:

  1. Blood pressure monitor (manual and digital)
  2. Fetal Doppler and thermometer for vital tracking
  3. Basic supplements and essential medications (iron, folic acid, deworming tablets)
  4. Portable oximeter for oxygen saturation
  5. Instruction cards and visual guides with QR-linked manuals in multiple languages
  6. Wendo AI Landline — an offline-enabled, multilingual assistant trained on maternal health protocols to guide caregivers through checkups, provide voice-based Q&A, compile basic health data, and alert professionals if needed.

Tier 2 – Delivery & Emergency Response
Engineered for emergency births in transit, refugee camps, or rural zones:

  1. Sterile delivery kit (scissors, gloves, cord clamps, antiseptic cream)
  2. Resuscitation bulbs and suction tools for newborn breathing
  3. Thermal blanket and baby mittens for warmth
  4. Blood loss estimation pads and hydration salts
  5. Rechargeable power bank embedded within the case for device support
  6. Foldable birth mat and minor surgical kit
  7. Location tracking feature (similar to AirTag technology) activated during emergencies to notify nearby healthcare providers or transport systems.

    Technical and Design Details
The Maisha Briefcase is built for real-world deployment:
  8. Compact & Modular: The case opens into two detachable tiers, enabling use in both transit and fixed locations like camps or clinics.
  9. Locally Manufactured: Components can be produced and assembled in Kenya, leveraging existing plastic molding and medical-grade material suppliers in Nairobi’s industrial area — reducing cost to an estimated $40 per unit.
  10. Offline Functionality: Wendo AI Landline requires no internet connection, powered by an embedded GSM chip and local data library of Swahili- and English-based maternal protocols.
  11. Ease of Integration: Designed to fit into public transit vehicles, refugee facilities, and community health centers, modeled after Kenya’s first aid kit policy for commercial transport.
  12. Data Linkage: When connected, the AI can transmit logs and reports to healthcare databases or partner NGOs for monitoring outcomes and trends.

    Impact and Scale Potential
By providing essential care where no clinics exist, the Maisha Maternity Briefcase aims to:

Reduce maternal and neonatal mortality by up to 30% in target regions.
Empower midwives and caregivers with tools and knowledge for safe deliveries.
Integrate with Ministries of Health, humanitarian organizations, and transit systems to ensure every mother on the move has access to essential maternal care.
