Recognition and reward is one of the biggest tools for reinforcing desired behaviours and values within your organisational culture. Develop a system to acknowledge and celebrate achievements that align with your core values. This could include formal awards, informal shout-outs during meetings, or performance-based incentives.
It is important to note though that different employees prefer different forms of recognition, so you will need to be flexible in your approach. A team member who values public recognition will, for example, appreciate a shout-out during a team meeting, while a more reserved individual might prefer a private thank-you note. You don’t have to necessarily reward everyone based on their specific preference, but understanding their preferences can enhance the impact of your recognition efforts. You need to also ensure that recognition is specific and timely. For example, if an employee exemplifies teamwork by leading a successful cross-departmental project, recognise their contribution with a detailed appreciation note and a team-wide announcement. This not only motivates the individual but also sets a positive example for others.
